The number of self-employed people in Peterborough and across Cambridgeshire has risen by 8 percent since the financial crisis and now stands at 57,900, according to new figures published by the Office of National Statistics.
In addition, despite self-employment falling from its peak slightly across the UK in the last year, Cambridgeshire bucked this trend with the number of self-employed people in the county estimated to have grown by 4200 in the same period.
The figures were highlighted by Business Debtline, the free debt advice service run by the Money Advice Trust, to warn of what they say is a worrying advice gap for people starting up their own business.
It says that many self-employed people get into difficulty because they started trading without the help needed to understand how to run a business and keep finances on track.
