Council imposes refugee ban

Northamptonshire County Council’s refusing to take in Syrian refugees.

The local authority’s told the government it can’t afford to settle them because of budget cuts and growing demand on services.

In a statement, the council says Northamptonshire’s population is growing rapidly and it has its highest ever level of unaccompanied asylum seeking children, as well as a record number of looked-after children.

It goes on to say that schools, social care and other support services are already under significant pressures.
