MPs plea over steel crisis

Streel workers in Corby will be closely watching the outcome of union meetings to discuss the crisis in the industry today.

15,000 jobs could be lost over the next 6 weeks, including hundreds in Northamptonshire, if a rescue deal for the Indian firm Tata isn’t reached.

The town’s MP is calling on the government to re-nationalise the industry, even if it’s only a temporary takeover.

Tom Pursglove has told Connect FM: “Re-nationalising the industry would give more time to find a buyer. One thing we know from Redcar is that once a site stops production, it’s very expensive to bring them back into use.”
