The MP for Corby is to meet the town’s steel workers to discuss the crisis engulfing the industry.

Tom Pursglove is working with the leader of the Borough Council to urge the government to act to save hundreds of jobs at the plant.

Meanwhile, Tom Beattie is accusing the government of fiddling while the steel industry burns.

The Labour councillor and former steelworker says David Cameron needs to act now on Chinese imports, back EU plans for higher tariffs and force firms to buy British for projects like HS2 – which will run through south Northamptonshire.

The Business Secretary will meet a potential buyer for Port Talbot before flying out to India to meet Tata Steel bosses.

David Cameron will also chair as Steel Summit at Downing Street today.

There’s some good news for steel workers in Corby.

The Pension Protection Fund says it will step in if Tata Steel’s British plants
close down.

The PPF’s chief executive Alan Rubenstein says it will work with Tata and the
pension regulator to find a solution for the British Steel pension scheme.
