Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the incident at around 7.30pm and Kettering firefighters were supported by crews from Burton Latimer, Rothwell, Wellingborough, Moulton and a specialist resource.
Incident Commander Mick Berry said: “The building involved was the 1920s boathouse, situated at the bottom of the park near the water chute, which is used predominantly for storage. The fire quickly developed and, at the time, as a precautionary measure, we advised local residents to keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke plume and wind direction.”
“However, within three hours the fire was under control and fire crews were present overnight and will be there today. Our current advice is that there is no significant risk from smoke but the structure is dangerous so people should stay away from the actual building. We’re working with Wicksteed Park to ensure the area is secure. Fire service investigators will also start work on the site this morning.”
The cause of the fire is not yet known and at this stage is not believed to be suspicious.
