Warning to drivers as stormy weather continues

Drivers are being urged to take extra care on motorways and major A roads as heavy rain and flooding continue to affect driving conditions across the country.

The Environment Agency has issued 75 flood warnings across the Southwest, the Midlands, North East, North West, and the East of England as of Monday evening, as well as 205 flood alerts.

The Met Office has issued Severe Weather Alerts for rain in the North East, and for wind in the North and South East of England. These will continue into this morning.

Highways England and its contractors are working around the clock to remove water and clear drains, and help keep traffic moving.

As of 10pm last night (Monday 21 November), flooding in the North West has closed the M62 westbound between junctions 22 to 21. And on the A628 in Derbyshire a fallen tree has closed the road between Mottram and Tintwistle.

Drivers are advised to check road conditions and the weather forecast before setting out and when travelling to listen to radio travel bulletins and to drive with additional care.
