It may not be the most enjoyable time on the pitch at the moment, but I think it does say a lot about the potential of the squad that we have at Peterborough United when you see so many of our squad called up by their countries for forthcoming international qualifiers or friendly fixtures.
At the time of writing this column (and I am expecting more), we have four players potentially away with their countries. Michael Smith was called up for the first time by Northern Ireland while midfielder Chris Forrester has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad – again his first appearance with his country.
Gabi Zakuani has once again been called up by DR Congo and Kgosi Ntlhe completed the quartet when he was named in the South Africa under 23 squad for a prestigious friendly with Brazil. We could potentially have at least two more call-ups for other players in the next few days.
We will be certainly be missing all four of these players when we entertain Coventry City on Good Friday, a game that is televised live by Sky Sports. While that is frustrating and disappointing as we could do with them here right now, it is excellent for the football club that these players are being recognised and selected at international level.
For Michael and Chris, it really is a great chance to stake their claim for the European Championships in the summer. Gabi’s games are important African Cup of Nations qualifiers while Kgosi will be playing in a friendly that is a warm up for the Olympic Games in Rio. I wish all four well and will report back on their progress in a couple of weeks.
Myself and Gregg are back on the radio this Friday with our Talking Sport show from 5pm-6pm. In recent weeks, we have spoken to snooker star Joe Perry, Darts ace Martin Adams, Northampton Town midfielder Joel Byram and a whole host of Saints stars. Don’t miss out on all the fun!
