600 jobs are going from the Northamptonshire based Travis Perkins group, which is also closing 30 branches to reduce costs.
It’s blamed declining sales in its trade divisions for plumbing and heating, which will be hit by cuts, along with some distribution centres.
The company says it hopes to relocate some affected staff.
Meanwhile the Northampton Herald & Post free weekly newspaper is to close.
Trinity Mirror is also shutting sister titles in Luton and Milton Keynes.
The move comes a month after it handed back four Metro franchises – including the one for the East Midlands.
