Three local Olympic and Paralympic heroes have been recommended to receive the city’s highest honour.
Gymnast Louis Smith MBE who added a silver medal in the pommel horse event in Rio to his already impressive Olympic medal haul, gold medal winning Paralympic rower James Fox and wheelchair basketball star Lee Manning who won bronze in Rio are now set to receive the Freedom of the City.
Former councillors Charles Swift OBE, Adrian Miners and Shelia Scott OBE have all been recommended for the status of Honorary Alderman.
Councillor Peter Hiller, cabinet member for growth, planning and housing development as well as chair of the honours selection panel, said: “The Freedom of the City is the highest honour the council can award and would be fitting recognition following the achievements of our local sporting heroes.
“It’s also fantastic that we have the chance to reward the hard work and dedication of three former councillors who collectively served our city for over a century.”
Recommendations for the Freedom of the City will be proposed by Councillor Hiller and seconded by Councillor Mohammed Jamil.
