Highways England says plans to upgrade part of the A14 in Cambridgeshire to motorway is mostly a move to make the road safer.
Ongoing work to reconstruct the road between Cambridge and Huntingdon is now over halfway to being complete – and should be ready by 2020.
Now the organisation wants the Ellington to Girton part to become motorway – saying they’re twice as safe as standard dual carriageways.
Plans will be submitted to Government over the winter.
Meanwhile the next stage of work – on the bridge at Swavesey – will require some full closures of the road during the autumn.
